Australian Aerospace Press Release – DMO Commends Australian Aerospace

Defence Material Organisation Commends Australian Aerospace Australian Aerospace and its joint venture partner, the Maritime Patrol Systems Program Office (MPSPO) received a high commendation for the P-3 Orion Safety By Inspection (SBI) Program at the recent Australian Defence Magazine Awards dinner in Canberra.

Reflecting on the achievement, Dr. Jens Goennemann Chief Executive Officer Australian Aerospace said “The Commonwealth’s prestigious commendation is an expression of the hard work and dedication of the Safety By Inspection team in delivering solutions for Australia’s fleet of RAAF P-3s.

“The P-3 fleet provides a critical link in the patrol and surveillance capabilities of the Australian Defence Force. The P-3 Safety By Inspection Program enables effective management of the aircraft structure beyond the established fatigue life”, Dr. Goennemann said.

The established fatigue life of the P-3’s critical structure was originally forecast to expire on the fleet-lead aircraft in early 2008. Australian Aerospace and joint venture partner MPSPO provided the SBI Program as a solution to the Australian Government to extend the structural life of type to meet the planned P-3 withdrawal from service date of 2018.

Rob Hunter Vice President Fixed Wing / Operations Australian Aerospace praised the efforts of the SBI team and their complex work: “Every member of the SBI team can stand tall with this recognition. SBI involves inspections of major structural components using nondestructive testing techniques to detect and/or prevent fatigue cracking well before it could become a threat to the safe operation of the aircraft.”

Under the Joint Venture, MPSPO has the responsibility for development of the inspection and modification requirements and Australian Aerospace is responsible for implementing the solution into existing deeper maintenance activity.

The SBI Program is a clear example of the knowledge and expertise Australian Aerospace and MPSPO are able to provide in directly contributing to Australia’s defence and security.
